“When someone deeply listens to you, it is like holding out a dented cup you’ve had
since childhood and watching it fill up with cold, fresh water.”

 John Fox

So what exactly is
spiritual direction?

also called:  soul care, anam cara,
spiritual guidance, or companionship

Though the term suggests guidance, spiritual directors do not give advice or act as experts. Instead, they offer presence, deep listening, and gentle questions that help you notice how the Spirit (or Divine, or Holy One) is moving in your life.

This is not therapy, coaching, or pastoral care. It is a space of freedom, curiosity, and grace—especially helpful in times of transition, silence, or longing. Whether you're discerning a path or simply wanting to pay closer attention to the sacred, spiritual direction invites you to listen deeply and grow in connection.

Frequently asked questions

*Where do I begin?* An initial 30-minute conversation is free (request via the contact form). Afterwards, we will both take time to discern if the Spirit is encouraging this as a place of listening. If a mutual decision is made to proceed, the second time we meet we will both sign a simple covenant detailing expectations of each other.

*Is there a licensing body that monitors spiritual directors?* Spiritual direction is not a regulated industry. It may be prudent to examine the supports and accountabilities the spiritual director you are considering has in place. As a member of several reputable spiritual direction organizations, I adhere to their standards of professional ethics regarding confidentiality, boundaries, privacy, and commitment to regular spiritual self-care and education. My business is also insured and a registered LLC in the state of Pennsylvania.

*What should I expect from you during a session?* The holy work in spiritual direction sparks from that little flame already living inside each of us. The Spirit meets us wherever we are. Each session is unique and largely dependent upon what you bring to it. I will not take notes or set its course, though I will ask questions. To encourage deeper mutual listening, I might ask if you would like us to: • Light a candle or incense. • Spend time in silence. • Pray aloud or silently. • Use a jar of question prompts. • Pull out wisdom cards. (My favorite are made by a Quaker spiritual director and can be found at Listen for Joy.)

*How do I find the "right" spiritual director for me?* Most spiritual directors offer a free initial conversation which should help in seeing if you think it is worth proceeding further. After that meeting, spend time in quiet listening over the course of at least several days. Notice the feelings you have around the possibility of continuing with this person. Do they make you feel safe … encouraged … heard? Does it seem as if their presence and questions will bring something new or fresh to your relationship with the Spirit? Do you feel a sense of hope at the idea of sharing with them?

*How many sessions are common?* Spiritual direction may last a few sessions, a season, or longer. It is most meaningful when you are committed to regular times of listening and exploration outside of sessions. How you do this will evolve, expand, and contract as you move through your circumstances … what is important is that you are seeking some form of intentional connection.

*Can I buy a gift certificate for my friend? I think they would really benefit from spiritual guidance.* Spiritual direction is a highly personal experience. It needs to be sought out by the individual, including them finding who might be a good fit for them. Since most spiritual directors offer free initial consultations, a recommendation is the best way to invite someone to the possibility.
